A team from SMU’s School of Computing and Information Systems, in collaboration with the University of Cambridge, has developed BreathPro, a system that monitors runners’ breathing and foot strike patterns to enhance performance. Led by SMU Assistant Professor of Computer Science Ma Dong, the project bridges a research gap by focusing on how runners breathe, rather than just measuring breathing rates. Developed between August 2023 and May 2024, BreathPro will now be tested in various running scenarios to explore performance interventions. Asst Prof Ma envisions BreathPro helping Singapore athletes optimise their performance and plans to integrate running insights, such as optimal gaits and breathing patterns, into a future coaching system.
