For her exemplary service, SMU Yong Pung How School of Law’s (YPHSL) recent graduate, Jolene Tan, who is now Deputy Public Prosecutor at the Attorney-General’s Chambers, would be receiving the Amellia Moo Spirit of Pro Bono Hero (LLB) Award at the SMU Pro Bono Centre Appreciation Dinner 2025 to be held today. She has been active in community service since her secondary school days, and with the strong support of her family, continued to contribute meaningfully while in law school – clocking over 258 hours in community service and pro bono work, well above SMU’s requirement. She said, “It was never about fulfilling a requirement, it was a real privilege to have the opportunity to make a difference with our time and legal knowledge. Pro bono helps others but it also offers valuable lessons about ourselves, and shapes us into more grounded, compassionate individuals.”
