In a commentary for Die Presse (Austria), SMU President Professor Lily Kong reflected on themes from the City Dialogues in Vienna. Asking what resilience means for cities today, she outlined three orientations: resilient cities that anticipate and adapt to disruption; regenerative cities that replenish ecological and social systems; and restorative cities that place people’s wellbeing at the centre of urban life. Citing research by SMU Professor of Urban Climate Winston Chow on urban heat and SMU Vice Provost of Research and Lee Kong Chian Professor of Computer Science Archan Misra on smart sensors, as well as the work of the Urban Institute, she highlighted the need for collaboration across government, academia, and industry.
