In its fourth annual meeting, the SMU-Queen Mary University of London (“SMU-QM”) Joint Research Forum, which is an event co-organised by the Centre for Cross-Border Commercial Law in Asia (CEBCLA), SMU School of Law and the Centre for Commercial Law Studies, Queen Mary University of London (“CCLS”), was hosted by CCLS on 8 June 2017 in London.
SMU sent a delegation led by the SMU School of Law Dean, Professor Yeo Tiong Min, S.C.; incoming Dean, Associate Professor Goh Yihan; Deputy Dean, Professor David Llewelyn; and CEBCLA Director, Professor Tang Hang Wu.
The forum was hosted by CCLS Director, Professor Spyros Maniatis who offered a welcome before the opening remarks by Professor Yeo Tiong Min, S.C. Prof. Maniatis talked about the joint LLM program between the universities and both Professors highlighted the significance of this joint workshop in enhancing the Asian and European commercial law research of both universities and being the beginning of future cooperation between the universities.
The Forum was then divided into two sessions chaired by Professor Chris Reed (QMUL) and Professor Duncan Matthews (QMUL), respectively. The presentations were as follows:
Session I
- Lecturer Dr Maria Ioannidou (QMUL): Hybrid Competition Law Enforcement and Public Redress: a complement to collective redress mechanisms? – commented on by Professor Howard Hunter (SMU).
- Lecturer Edward Ti (SMU): Why Economic Efficiency Requires Market Price Compensation for Regulatory Downzoning of Land – commented on by Senior Lecturer Dr Leon Vinokur (QMUL).
- Reader Dr Miriam Goldby (QMUL): Interpretation of contracts in line with commercial common sense – commented on by Associate Professor Lee Pey Woan (SMU).
Session II
- Research Fellow Dr. Casey Watters (SMU): Veil Piercing in Hong Kong and Singapore – commented on by Dr Andromachi Georgosouli (QMUL).
- Andreaa Miglionico (QMUL) The Disclosure Regime of Credit Rating Agencies.
- Associate Professor Tham Chee Ho (SMU): Joinder of parties in equitable assignment – commented on by Prof. Sir Richard Aikens (QMUL).
Closing remarks were provided by Prof. Sir Bernard Rix (QMUL) and SMU School of Law Deputy Dean, Professor David Llewelyn.
