Sixth honorary degree for SMU business professor

Professor Howard Thomas (2nd from right in jacket, in image above), who is SMU Lee Kong Chian School of Business Distinguished Term Professor of Strategic Management and Management Education, MasterCard Chair of Financial and Social Inclusion and also Director of the Academic Strategy and Management Education Unit, has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree, Doctor of Business Administration, by Woosong University in South Korea.

He was also invited to serve on the Woosong Global Advisory Council to provide strategic input for the programme development strategy, engagement and partnerships related to all programmes at the University.

Professor Thomas was in Daejeon, South Korea, in March to receive the honour and appointment at an event held in conjunction with the Naming Day Ceremonies of the John E. Endicott College of International Studies, a new venture at Woosong University that will incorporate aspects of international business with international policy.  The College is named after John Endicott, a former professor in the Ivan Allen College Sam Nunn School of International Affairs and current president of Woosong University.

During the event, Professor Thomas also participated in a roundtable discussion on ’The Future of Business Education in Asia in the Era of Industry 4.0’ with academic experts from America, China, Thailand and Vietnam.

On his latest accomplishment, Professor Thomas said, “This was an unexpected personal honour which demonstrates SMU’s growing profile as a leading, entrepreneurial University, with a first-rate business school in the Asean region.”

Professor Thomas, whose career in business and management education has spanned 50 years, has been a business school dean on three continents, and has written over 40 books and around 300 articles on strategic management to become one of the most highly-cited scholars in his field.
