Lawyers who attended a townhall meeting on Nov 27 reported that the majority of those present were against making free legal work compulsory. The feeling among law students was that compulsory pro bono work was contrived, and resembled the Community Involvement Programme (CIP) in school. First-year SMU student Victor Looi, however, said that "[the scheme] would be a good start in inculcating in lawyers the importance of community service".
