
SMU student Hong Yijie (transliteration) left school in Secondary Three and only resumed his studies after completing National Service, when he began taking night classes at ITE. He later obtained his O-Level certificate and went on to pursue Accountancy and Finance at Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP), where his outstanding academic performance earned him a scholarship. Upon graduation, he received offers from two local universities and chose SMU, where he was awarded the Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship to Encourage Upgrading, which supports students aged 25 and above with significant work experience in furthering their education. Today, he is pursuing a double degree in Accountancy and Business at SMU.
