In a commentary, SMU Associate Professor of Law Eugene Tan highlighted Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s plans on artificial intelligence (AI) and how Singapore would embrace this new wave of technology. However, Assoc Prof Tan also mentioned that technology must augment human capabilities, instead of rendering them irrelevant. He introduced the concept of an AI framework of values, calling it the humanising force, as it is grounded in moral reasoning and leadership. Assoc Prof Tan also stressed that Singapore’s challenge lies in making AI a humanistic enterprise where economic value and ethical values coexist to build trust and sustain well-being.
