In an infographic published in The Straits Times, SMU presented strategies on how to “green” cities, which were discussed at the SMU City Dialogues Vienna on 2 July 2025 in conjunction with the University’s 25th anniversary. The infographic explored how cities could go from “surviving” to “thriving” in pursuit of resilience. SMU Professor of Urban Climate Winston Chow noted how investments in resilience could be more targeted to the different issues that cities face. SMU’s Urban Institute Director Professor Orlando Woods highlighted the concept of a “smart-enough” city, which is relative to the context and the specific problem being addressed. SMU Provost Professor Alan Chan said that resilient cities foster neighbourliness, inclusive mobility and inter-generational connection, and make every effort to cultivate spaces of care.
