
In a commentary, SMU Lee Kong Chian Visiting Professor of Law Walter Woon likened Singapore to a mousedeer caught between two elephants – the United States and China – as tensions between the superpowers grow. He emphasised the need for Singapore to remain cautious and agile to avoid being caught in the crossfire. Prof Woon suggested that Singapore could play a unique role by leveraging its relationship with China, acting as an interpreter between East and West, providing educational opportunities that bridge both perspectives, and serving as a neutral platform for quiet diplomacy.
