In a commentary, SMU Dean of Students and Professor of Sociology (Practice) Paulin Straughan reflected on how significant August 9 is for Singaporeans this year, as Singapore celebrates 55 years of independence in the midst of a global pandemic. She urged all Singaporeans to step up to play their part to ensure that Singapore will survive COVID-19 and to address the visible inequalities if we want to strive forward as one Singapore.
