Fire Evacuation Drill At The Li Ka Shing Library Building
OSS (Office of Safety and Security) together with Li Ka Shing Library will be carrying out a fire evacuation drill at the library on 9 December 2019. The Fire Evacuation Drill will take about 1.5 hours and is an important exercise to test the readiness of SMU's fire safety personnel, familiarize building occupants with fire evacuation procedures and improve existing fire safety arrangements/procedures.
The fire drill will involve the simulation of an evacuation scenario by triggering of fire alarm within Li Ka Shing Library. An automated Public Address (PA) announcement will be activated to inform users that investigations are being carried out. This will be followed by another PA announcement asking users to evacuate from the Li Ka Shing Library. Responses by the fire safety personnel (fire wardens, campus security, fire-fighting team) will also be simulated during the drill.
What You Must Do:
- When you hear the announcement advising you to evacuate from the building over the Library’s PA system, please do so immediately via the nearest staircase exit in a safe and orderly manner without panicking. Proceed to the main Assembly Area (AA) at the Campus Green. Please do not use the lifts as they may not be functioning in an actual fire.
- The respective fire warden at your floor has been briefed about SMU’s fire safety preparedness procedures (fire safety message announcements, escape routes, assembly area), and will guide you during the exercise.
- In the event of inclement weather, you will be guided to assemble at the T-Junction, which serves as the back-up Assembly Area (AA) in the Concourse/ Basement.
- Fire Wardens and other fire safety personnel will also be around to provide advice and guidance during the drill/evacuation process.
- At the main Assembly Area (AA) on Campus Green, the Fire Wardens will record your attendance.
- The drill will end after ascertaining that all the occupants of the Li Ka Shing Library have evacuated to safety and their attendances at the AA are taken.
Things To Take Note:
During fire evacuation drill:
- The lifts will not be operating.
- The entrances of the Lobby will be closed to visitors.
Participation/Feedback:
We hope that users of the Li Ka Shing Library will familiarize themselves with the fire emergency plan and the fire safety evacuation procedure prior to the drill.
