Commenting on the candidate for Singapore’s next Prime Minister, SMU Associate Professor of Law Eugene Tan believed that the choice for the new People’s Action Party (PAP) Assistant Secretary-General would provide some indication. He added that the impending PAP internal leadership changes should see the fourth-generation (4G) leaders take on more of the roles vacated by retiring Central Executive Committee members, in tandem with developments in the Cabinet. However, Associate Prof Tan opined that each leadership renewal and transition is unique and that past precedents have limited utility. He also noted that the next Cabinet reshuffle might be in the latter half of next year and attention should be paid to the roles and responsibilities that the 4G ministers would undertake.
