In a commentary, SMU Associate Professor of Organisational Behaviour and Human Resources Roy Chua shared his views on why expatriates often have an edge over local employees when it comes to the hiring and promotion process in multinational corporations. He also provided insights to what local executives can do to increase their chances of being hired or promoted by foreign employers. Associate Prof Chua opined that to thrive in a global firm, employees need to be able to communicate across cultures, make persuasive arguments, and perhaps even engage in self-promotion.
