Peer support unlocks troubled minds

Founded in 2004, SMU Peer Helpers was the first such peer support group to be started in a tertiary institution. Currently, it has about 50 undergraduates who have been trained to spot signs of distress, such as signs of being overwhelmed, in their schoolmates. These peer helpers work closely with the counsellors at the University’s Mrs Wong Kwok Leong Student Wellness Centre and have undergone strict training to ensure that they are able to give the appropriate support and care. Ms Ada Chung, Head of the Student Wellness Centre said that by reaching out to their schoolmates, peer helpers play a very important role. She added, “They bridge the gap between the school community and the Centre.”
