Against a backdrop of burgeoning interest in global and regional exposure, SMU’s annual Study Abroad Fair has been reimagined as the Global Education Fair (GE Fair), reflecting the wider spectrum of international programmes now available through the University and its partner institutions. The refreshed name underscores SMU’s commitment to developing globally agile graduates who are equipped to thrive in an interconnected world.
Held on 28 January 2026 at the University’s basement concourse, the 2026 GE Fair was organised by the SMU Centre for Global Education and Opportunities (GEO). A member of the Academic Services and Operations (ASO) group, this signature GEO event continues to serve as a key gateway for students seeking transformative international experiences, offering insights into study, internship and overseas immersion opportunities.
Gateway to a world of opportunities
One of the most anticipated highlights of the GE Fair remains the University’s International Student Exchange Programme (ISEP). Managed by GEO, ISEP partners with over 230 universities across 46 countries, to provide students with the opportunity to study at leading institutions worldwide while immersing themselves in diverse cultural and academic environments.

With participation from representatives across 30 partner universities, the Fair drew strong participation across the SMU community. The T-Junction was abuzz with energy as students engaged in lively conversations with university representatives, gathered information materials and explored pathways for their global journeys.

In a first, this year’s Fair was organised into two distinct zones. Universities from Oceania, the Americas and Europe lined the longer arm of the T-Junction, creating a vibrant corridor of global opportunities. Participating institutions included the University of Sydney, University of Minnesota and University of Glasgow, among others.

The shorter arm of the T-junction was dedicated to an Asia Pavilion spotlighting partner universities across China, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, South Korea and Thailand. This curated cluster, which drew large numbers of students, underscored the growing interest in regional opportunities and reflected SMU’s commitment to deepening engagement within Asia.

These programmes enable students to deepen their understanding of Asia’s diverse cultures and socio-economic landscapes, building region-specific knowledge and cross-cultural competencies highly valued by employers both locally and globally. This year’s Fair also saw new participation from Kyushu University, further broadening the range of regional opportunities available to students.

Globally-agile, Asia-ready graduates
“Programmes situated closer to home allow students to gain deeper insights into the cultures and socio-economic landscapes of Singapore’s Asian neighbours, building region-specific knowledge and cross-cultural skillsets valued by employers both locally and globally,” commented Dr. Navin Rajagobal, Senior Director of SMU’s ASO group while touring the Asia Pavilion.
“SMU’s strong graduate employability outcomes are underpinned by our commitment to offering and enhancing real-world programmes that give students an edge in today’s interconnected world, and a sharper appreciation of the opportunities across Asia. I am pleased that the Fair provides students with the chance to explore the diverse experiential programmes available to them.”

Diverse pathways to global exposure
Beyond semester long exchanges, GEO offers a wide variety of flexible global opportunities that cater to students’ interests, academic goals and schedules. Short-Term Study Programmes (SSP), typically conducted over one to two weeks, provide meaningful international exposure at partner universities in both credit-bearing and non-credit formats. Such structured and group programmes provide a supportive environment for students engaging in overseas learning.
For those seeking international work experience, initiatives such as the Dato’ Kho Hui Meng Career Centre’s ASEAN Internship Programme (AIP) and the Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship’s Global Innovation Immersion (GII) Programme offer key insights into overseas business and innovation ecosystems. The enhanced AIP+, which integrates an academic course with a 13-week internship in ASEAN, enables students to gain an even deeper understanding of the region and access to valuable networks.
In addition, the University offers overseas immersion opportunities with its SMU-X overseas project experiences, which combine academic learning with real world projects in partnership with regional companies. A range of Overseas Study Missions offered across SMU schools, combine classroom learning with industry-focused study trips.
“The renaming of the Fair reflects the vital role that every one of our global programmes plays in shaping globally-agile, Asia-ready graduates with real world experience,” said Mr Rick Tay, Head of GEO. “Under the leadership of our Senior Director, Dr. Navin Rajagobal, we remain committed to strengthening the transformative impact of our programmes—empowering students to broaden their horizons, build their global edge and confidently navigate the opportunities and challenges of an interconnected world.”
