SMU Professor of Information Systems (Practice) Arcot Desai Narasimhalu commented on the growing popularity of apps like Uber and Airbnb that bypass traditional business models. Prof Narasimhalu noted that such services challenge traditional companies to change their game, citing the example of how NTUC FairPrice and Cold Storage were forced to keep selected outlets open for 24 hours due to Mustafa’s 24-hour service. Prof Narasimhalu added that some apps could cause a pricing war, or a larger, more established firm may buy over the disruptor.
