SMU Associate Professor of Law Eugene Tan shared his views on how the coming General Election might feature in Prime Minister (PM) Lee Hsien Loong’s National Day Rally speech. He believes that Singaporeans would expect present-day challenges such as public transportation, cost of living, and immigration issues, to be addressed, as it “reflects the government being sensitive to some of the concerns”. Associate Prof Tan also noted that it is not possible to separate the SG50 message from the election, given that the National Day Rally speech provides a great opportunity and much potential to get Singaporeans inspired and confident about what’s going to come in the years ahead. However, he highlighted that it would be a challenge to blend the two components, “such that the messages that need to go out to the country don’t come across as partisan electioneering”.
