Optimising the crowd with smart technologies

SMU Professor of Information Systems and Director of the Fujitsu-SMU Urban Computing & Engineering Corp Lab (UNiCEN), Lau Hoong Chuin leads a team that designs methods and systems to optimise movements in taxi queues, convention centre crowds, maritime logistics and last-mile deliveries. He hopes that the work that will come out of the lab will not only ease queues and congestion, but also reduce the number of vehicles on the road and cut down on carbon emissions. “The work we are doing at UNiCEN is aligned with Singapore’s vision to be a Smart Nation, a key aspect of which is to make good use of technology to help people and businesses make smart decisions,” he said.
