Rare riot breaks out in Singapore

SMU Associate Professor of Law Eugene Tan told Life Week, “On Sundays, about 20,000 foreign workers would head to Little India on specially chartered buses and some would go there on their own. Little India is a densely populated area. Traffic is congested and conflict can easily be triggered by road accidents.” He added “There are currently around 300,000 migrant workers from South Asia. We need to be clear about the fact that most foreign workers are law-abiding and in reality, the crime rate among foreign workers compared to that of local residents is lower.” SMU Assistant Professor of Sociology Nicholas Harrigan said that Singaporeans go on social media blaming the South Asian workers for not abiding the law and preferring to use violence as a means to an end but these South Asian workers are genuinely dissatisfied with their situation in Singapore, which could have accounted for what happened. Both SMU professors were commenting on the riot which took place in Singapore on 8 December in Little India, Singapore’s South Asian enclave.
