Tracking Online Engagement of Scholarly Works

Since their emergence in 2010, altmetrics have received considerable attention for their potential as new indicators of online influence, and perhaps, even research impact. According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, “altmetrics—short for alternative metrics—aims to measure Web-driven scholarly interactions, such as how often research is tweeted, blogged about, or bookmarked”. In their article “Altmetrics: A Manifesto”, Jason Priem et al (2010) explained that “with altmetrics, we can crowdsource peer-review. Instead of waiting months for two opinions, an article’s impact might be assessed by thousands of conversations and bookmarks in a week”.
