The future of tolerance

Commenting on tolerance and intolerance in our society today and in the future, SMU Chairman Mr Ho Kwon Ping, S R Nathan Fellow and Executive Chairman of Banyan Tree Holdings, quoted French philosopher Voltaire who said that “the hallmark of a free society is that I may totally disapprove of what you say, but I'll defend your right to say it until I die.” Mr Ho said that we do not yet have that attitude in Singapore. SMU Assistant Professor of Asian Studies Hoon Chang Yau commented that, “Unlimited tolerance will lead to the disappearance of tolerance. Tolerance cannot be unlimited, there has to be a certain limit, but where do we draw the line? We have to set up certain kind of ground rules, or certain universal values that everyone could agree on.”
