SMU Assistant Professor of Political Science Clara Portela, commenting on the current US spying scandal, said that it is normal for countries to monitor other countries including their allies and close associates. However, she noted that intelligence co-operation between allies is usually asymmetrical, and that the close sharing of information between European allies may have created some anxiety within the United States which could have contributed to the current situation.
