SMU’s Team JOWW, comprising four Year 2 students from our School of Accountancy – Chew Wee Leng, Onson Li Yip On, Chia Wai Chew and Ng Wei Ting, has emerged victorious in the Singapore final of the CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) 2013 Global Challenge!

In fending off stiff competition from NTU’s Team Gallant and two NUS teams, Team NUS and Team Techcellence in a tense regional final held at the Singapore Polytechnic, the SMU quartet clinched top honours as Singapore Champions from a field of 34 teams which took part in this year’s CIMA Global Business Challenge (GBC 2013).   Participating regions for the GBC 2013 included Australia, Bangladesh, China, Ghana, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Malaysia, Middle East, Myanmar, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Poland, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Thailand, United Kingdom, Vietnam, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The impressive showing earned $2,000 cash prize and CIMA scholarships for Team JOWW and a place at the global final to be held from 28 – 29 August in Johannesburg, South Africa. The four SMU students will now represent Singapore to pit their skills and wit against students from around the world at the occasion.

The CIMA Global Business Challenge, which is being held in partnership with Barclays, is an international business management competition designed to bring out the best in potential, young business leaders. It provides students with a great opportunity to test the depth of their business management knowledge, gain global exposure and expand upon their competitive ability. It also offers a platform for students to showcase their business and leadership talent to potential employers. Through their participation in the competition, which requires all teams to analyse, report and present on a CIMA case study, some participants have landed themselves internship opportunities with prestigious companies.

Congratulations, Team Joww. We are confident that you will continue to fly the SMU flag high when you take on the world’s best at the global final of the CIMA GBC 2013. Best of luck!
