SMU Assistant Professor of Law and NMP Eugene Tan questioned the purpose of detaining the 29 foreign bus drivers who participated in the illegal strike at Admiralty West dormitory before they were convicted of any wrongdoing, and prior to deportation. To that, Acting Minister for Manpower Tan Chuan-Jin explained that the building served not only as a detention centre, but also as an immigration depot under the Immigration Act.
