Unlike in previous elections, the People’s Action Party seems to be taking a more low-key approach for the upcoming Punggol East by-election, as fewer political heavyweights are stepping forward to lobby for votes for its candidate Koh Poh Koon. SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan commented that the presence of Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean underscored the party’s support for Koh. He said that the ruling party had to strike a balance between showing support and sending the message that this campaign belonged to Koh. He added that Koh has a good campaign strategy which promises to reach out to a broad spectrum of voters.
