The Punggol East by-election will be a four-cornered fight after Singapore Democratic Party withdrew at the eleventh hour. SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan commented that even though Workers’ Party candidate Lee Li Lian lost in the 2011 General Election, she had received 41.02% of the votes. This was much better than Singapore Democratic Alliance candidate Desmond Lim, who only garnered 4.45%. This showed that opposition supporters in the constituency were more inclined to vote for the stronger opposition candidate, and were not keen to dilute opposition votes.
