SMU Assistant Professor of Law and political analyst Eugene Tan commented that the Punggol East by-election would still be focused on the People’s Action Party (PAP) and Workers’ Party candidates. This election is very important to the PAP. If its win is only marginal, it would be a bad sign for the ruling party. If WP garners less support than in 2011, it would imply that the voters are not happy with their performance. Both PAP and WP are unlikely to mention Michael Palmer’s affair during the campaign, as the voters are already aware of the reasons behind this by-election.
