SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan highlighted that while the ruling party has tackled some issues facing Punggol East over the past two month, such as the Rivervale Plaza, the constituency is still facing problems such as a lack of hawker centres. He commented that the opposition parties would not be able to use the Palmer affair to their advantage in this election, as residents are not that narrow-minded. The election is likely to be dominated by pressing national issues such as the recent AIM transaction, high COE prices and SMRT strike, among others, as these issues are more likely to tug at the heartstrings of the public.
