SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan commented that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s decision to call a snap election in Punggol East demonstrated his exemplary leadership and that he listens to the ground. Assistant Prof Tan said that PM Lee called for the by-election so that Singapore could put its focus back on pressing issues as soon as possible. He also said that while the Constitution stated that a by-election is not mandatory, it is almost an unwritten rule that a by-election must be held, driven by public expectations.
