Minister of State Halimah Yacob is reportedly slated to be the next Speaker of Parliament. SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan commented that Halimah is a “great” and “symbolic” candidate. This not only means that Singapore would see the first woman appointed to the post, but that Muslim women wearing head scarves can play a significant role in national affairs. Assistant Prof Tan said that he was a little surprised by the ruling party’s intention, and that it is possible the Prime Minister wants a candidate who could “excite” and “motivate”.
