Singapore Management University (SMU) has launched ASEAN Internship Programme Plus (AIP+), giving students the opportunity to combine academic learning with hands-on industry experience across the region.
Jointly developed by the Centre for Global Education & Opportunities (GEO) and the Dato’ Kho Hui Meng Career Centre (DKHMCC), with support from SMU’s Overseas Centre in Ho Chi Minh City, AIP+ offers students a seamless blend of coursework, internships and in-market engagement. This initiative is in line with SMU’s Vision 2030 to shape future-ready graduates who can support Asia’s growth and burgeoning talent needs.
“This is the first time GEO is offering an academic course as part of the AIP. We are bringing together the best of classroom learning and workplace experience so our students can gain a deeper, more connected understanding of the world they will work in,” said Rick Tay, Head of GEO.
The inaugural run of AIP+, which took place from 5 May in Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam, featured academic modules developed with Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM). Focused on politics, economy and society in the Vietnamese context, these classes were enriched by immersive site visits and professional exchanges that enhanced the internship experience.
Students visited a range of organisations, including Singapore-based and international firms such as BOSCH, CapitaLand and Frasers Property Vietnam, alongside local companies like Phan Nam Farm and Vina Games. These visits offered behind-the-scenes insights into diverse sectors such as technology, real estate, sustainability and gaming, and revealed how industries connect through regional and global networks.
“We’re proud to host this inaugural AIP+ programme in Vietnam. Our role is about bridging cultures and building trust, with students, local partners, and the wider ASEAN community,” commented Viet Anh Vu, Director, SMU OCHCMC.
One of the programme highlights included an Industry Engagement Session in Ho Chi Minh City, featuring a keynote and panel discussion on talent development and future-ready skills. Representatives from leading companies such as Shopee Vietnam, WHT Trade & Investment Consulting, and SMARTR.CO shared their perspectives during a panel session. Drawing from their rich experiences across e-commerce, consulting and tech entrepreneurship, the panel explored the region's evolving skills landscape. Students gained valuable insights into industry expectations, the impact of AI and automation and the importance of adaptability and cultural intelligence.
“We have welcomed SMU interns for the past seven years, and they have consistently been among the best we’ve worked with. SMU has supported my start-up’s growth by preparing students who are eager to learn about our country and culture, and who possess the technical skills to contribute meaningfully at work,” said Van Nguyen, Founder & CEO, SMARTR.CO.
AIP+ likewise gave students a good opportunity to connect with SMU alumni and fellow interns in Vietnam, building a professional network and a sense of community. Friendships formed during the programme provided peer support and lasting bonds.
"Through courses on workplace culture and Vietnamese norms, I gained a deeper understanding of my colleagues and the country I would call home for the next few months. Lively class discussions, fuelled by diverse internship experiences, broadened my perspective, while the programme gave me lasting friendships across faculties — from playing pickleball to travelling Vietnam together," commented Victoria Jader, Year 3 Social Sciences Student, SMU.
As the ASEAN Internship Programme evolves, the AIP+ model signals a promising future for integrated overseas learning. It provides structure and support for students to gain academic credit while immersing themselves in diverse work environments. This aligns closely with one of SMU’s priorities of growth in Asia, nurturing talent who are culturally agile and regionally connected to contribute meaningfully to Asia’s dynamic economies.
“We warmly welcome more employers to come on board. By offering internships, you're not just providing work experience, you’re helping shape a new generation of professionals ready to contribute to and thrive in Asia’s dynamic growth,” shared Corrine Ong, Director, DKHMCC.
The success of this pilot run is a testament to the collaboration between DKHMCC, GEO and OCHCMC, and reaffirms SMU’s belief that thoughtfully designed global exposure equips students to lead confidently in a rapidly changing world. It also demonstrates how Vision 2030 comes alive through innovative, cross-border programmes like AIP+ that blend academic rigour, industry relevance, and regional growth opportunities.
“AIP+ embodies what we strive for at Academic Services & Operations (ASO): innovative, cross-functional programmes that bring academic learning into real-world contexts. It’s a strong example of how we can deliver value to students, partners, and the region all at once,” commented Dr. Navin Rajagobal, Senior Director, ASO.
