In a commentary, SMU Senior Lecturer of Organisational Behaviour and Human Resources Paul Lim discussed whether the ‘996’ work culture commonly associated with Chinese companies would dominate Singapore’s workplace as more Chinese firms set up operations here, and if Singapore can continue to uphold fair workplace norms. Referencing Singapore’s Employment Act, his observations of Chinese firms, and the Agoda retrenchment case, he opined that while Singapore must continue to welcome international firms, strong labour laws, together with employees’ awareness of and willingness to assert their rights, are essential to preserving fairness, balance, and respect in the workplace.
