At the launch of Universities Reinvented: Shaping Legacy and Impact for a New World, published as part of the S R Nathan Fellowship, SMU President Professor Lily Kong reflected on how universities must continually reinvent themselves — from educating for the 100-year life, to measuring what truly matters in research, to redefining success for Asian universities. She urged university leaders to exercise moral courage and to be “stewards of possibility” that prepare students not only for jobs, but for thoughtful engagement with the world.
Guest-of-Honour Minister for Education Desmond Lee commended Prof Kong’s forward-looking vision, aligning with national priorities to nurture interdisciplinary talent, strengthen lifelong learning, and drive impactful research in the age of AI.
Speeches by Minister Lee and Professor Kong for their reflections on the evolving role of universities are available below.
The event, held at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, gathered around 120 guests including academics, policymakers, and partners, and was covered in The Business Times and Lianhe Zaobao.
