In memory of Mr Yong Pung How

By the SMU Corporate Communications team

Singapore’s former Chief Justice Mr Yong Pung How passed away peacefully on 9 January 2020 at the age of 93.

SMU was most privileged to have had Mr Yong Pung How as the University’s Pro-Chancellor (2008-2010) and Chancellor (2010-2015).

Mr Yong was a prominent lawyer, banker and Singapore’s former Chief Justice who made significant contributions to the impact and growth of legal education and research in Singapore’s local universities. In addition to his role as SMU’s Pro-Chancellor and subsequently Chancellor, he was also the founding Chairman of the School of Law Advisory Board. Through his sterling leadership and guidance, the School was able to reach each of its milestones successfully. His passion for the law was undisputed and his support towards legal education was a major encouragement during the time when the SMU law school was still in its infancy. Undoubtedly, the School is where it is today because of his wisdom and encouragement.

In 2007, Mr Yong was conferred the Doctor of Laws honoris causa – SMU’s honorary degree for special individuals whose insight and achievements contribute significantly to the study and practice of law. That same year, the Yong Pung How Professorship of Law was established and was made possible by a generous endowed contribution by the Yong Shook Lin Trust. Mr Yong also made generous gifts to the Research Centres on Cross Border Commercial Law in Asia and Intellectual Assets and the Law in Asia, as well as to the Yong Pung How Bursaries which have made a positive impact on many SMU students.

Mr Yong also gave his time selflessly, gracing SMU Patron’s Day Celebrations and Commencement Ceremonies through the years. He was also instrumental in making it possible for SMU to construct the School of Law building, which opened in 2017.

Mr Yong will always be remembered as one of SMU’s greatest philanthropists through his generosity and strong support for SMU students and faculty.

Singapore has lost one of its most eminent public figures and the University is proud to have had such a warm and close relationship with Mr Yong throughout the years.
