SMU supports Singapore’s water conservation efforts

In a symbolic support of Singapore World Water Day (SWWD), about 80 SMU staff, students and faculty, decked out in blue T-shirts and other blue-colour accessories, came together on 20 March 2019, to form a large water droplet at the Campus Green and voiced their support for the SWWD theme – ‘Make Every Drop Count’.

Organised by the student club SMU Verts which promotes environmental conservation, Office of Campus Infrastructure and Services, and national water agency PUB, the event was held to spread the message of water conservation and the need to work together to use this precious resource responsibly.

In addition to the photo shoot, the SMU community was also encouraged to pledge their commitment to conserve water on PUB’s website.

Mr Sundar Selvam, Vice President, Office of Campus Infrastructure and Services, said “SMU has the potential to inspire and motivate one and all on water conservation if each of its community member adopts water conservation as a way of life. This is a commitment we need to make to the world, now. Let’s not drop out to save the drop and make every drop of water count for the future.”

Mr Tay Wei Sheng, SMU Verts President enthused, “As the President of SMU Verts, I am glad to have the opportunity to partner PUB during this year’s World Water Day. Creating awareness of water issues through events such as this are some of the ways we can learn to value this precious resource. I look forward to more meaningful collaboration with PUB to spread environmental awareness to the SMU student population.”

“The water crisis experienced around the globe reminds me that we are blessed to have clean water every day and it should not be taken for granted. For me to be part of this event that helps to raise awareness on the importance of saving water is a simple way to say ‘I Care’,” added Mr Daniel Goh, Manager, Office of Student Life.

Since 1993, the United Nations has held World Water Day annually on 22 March to focus the world’s attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.

The Singapore World Water Day (SWWD) started in 2008 and has become a platform to rally the community to celebrate and conserve water, and organise events about water. This year, the annual celebration opened on 2 March, with numerous roadshows and community events lined up islandwide around the theme ‘Make Every Drop Count’.
