SMU on Wednesday (26 April) launched its lifelong learning unit, SMU Academy, which is the first in Singapore to offer modular courses that can be accumulated into credits leading to master's degrees. Speaking at the launch at the Resorts World Sentosa Convention Centre, Education Minister (Higher Education and Skills) Ong Ye Kung noted that admission into the Academy should, as far as possible, be kept open to whoever needs the skills for work. “If we have to select participants because demand far exceeds supply, or we are subsidising the course significantly to prepare someone for a new career, then we should take into consideration the learner’s aptitude and interest through interviews, portfolios, or nomination by employers,” he said.
SMU Provost Professor Lily Kong said: “In the context of a challenging Singapore economy and the transformation that is required of the workforce, SMU sees the opportunity to contribute significantly to adult education and lifelong learning in Singapore through the establishment of the SMU Academy. The Academy builds on SMU’s reputation, and leverages its prime location in the city, faculty expertise, and well-developed ties with business and industry to offer a strong value proposition to adult learners, including our own alumni.”
