Paralympian wins silver at World Swimming C’ships

SMU second-year student Yip Pin Xiu, 22, clinched a silver medal in the women’s 50m backstroke at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) World Swimming Championships. She clocked 1min 00.80secs to finish second in the event’s S3 category. Pin Xiu, who suffered from muscular dystrophy, said that her victory came unexpected, and that she was more encouraged as it was a sign that she was among the world’s best paralympians. Pin Xiu made history when she achieved the world record at the 2009 Asian Youth Paralympic Games with a time of 56.62s.
