Taking a U-turn is not the only way to solve the problem

In a commentary by reporter Ho Sheo Be on the issue of whether to politicise the management of town councils, she noted that SMU Assistant Professor of Law Eugene Tan had earlier pointed out three situations that could magnify the risks of doing so. These situations include, the period of transition between political parties after the elections, when staff members associated with political parties are hired or assigned to undertake major projects, and when the current town council’s management report comes under scrutiny and is challenged. He had been of the opinion that apart from the dispute over the computer management system involving Aljunied-Hougang Town Council, there had rarely been major issues associated to the transfer of town council management between political parties. Assistant Prof Tan added that there could be greater transparency when it comes to hiring people associated with political parties.
