SMU student starts social enterprise to help the poor become entrepreneurs

SMU student Jamon Mok Zixuan won the Canon Young Entrepreneur Awards (YEA) for starting up Gazaab Social Ventures. Aimed at alleviating poverty in less developed countries, Gazaab Social Ventures organises business competitions and training, inviting local entrepreneurs to share their success stories and educate participants on business skills such as financial management, technology, and networking. At the end of each session, participants are invited to each submit a business plan. The winners will then receive funding for their plans, and the local Gazaab staff will provide the necessary assistance throughout the process. 20 winners have been selected over the past 3 years, each awarded $400 to start their business. Jamon said that to obtain more funding to grow the venture, they have decided to transform Gazaab into a social enterprise and adopted a more viable business model. Now in his final year, Jamon hopes to focus on Gazaab after graduation and help more people gain entrepreneurial knowledge and opportunities to escape poverty.
