SMU Associate Professor of Finance and Vice President, Business Development & External Relations Annie Koh commented on the future of Singapore's manufacturing sector. She said that Singapore needs manufacturing to fortify its strength in niche service areas. The transformation of the manufacturing sector to support the service sector implies that Singapore is building greater stickiness and reinforcing its comparative advantage. This integration of both service and manufacturing sectors would help Singapore build higher barriers to entry and its education system has to develop the right level of human capital with skills straddling both sectors. She concluded that that would be the ultimate barrier against rising competition and producing quality workers.
