AI companions could help address loneliness and expand access to mental health support, but they could also deepen existing social inequalities. A new study, “How AI companions could deepen social inequality”, published in Nature Human Behaviour led by SMU Assistant Professor of Learning Analytics Zhang Qiyang, introduced a framework for understanding how AI companions may affect different groups unevenly. It also offered recommendations for policymakers, developers and users to maximise the technology’s benefits while mitigating its risks. Asst Prof Zhang warned that without safeguards, those most in need of human support could be especially exposed to harm.
