In a commentary, SMU Vice President (Partnerships and Engagement) and Lee Kong Chian Professor of Communication & Technology Lim Sun Sun opined that mobile games may give one’s overscheduled brains a small reset amid the relentless pressures of modern life. Prof Lim highlighted that each mini-activity commands attention, focuses energy and sharpens concentration, refreshing one for the next real-life undertaking. She added that rather than a distraction from work, these bursts of mobile game play can actually be restorative. Prof Lim said that the mobile games’ ability to grant people moments of freedom in their relentless schedules, allowing them to recalibrate and recharge, is particularly welcome in their hurried and harried lives. She added that they can also be a salve for the pressures of modern life, making even insignificant moments feel productive, uplifting and just a little more joyful.
