In a commentary, SMU Associate Professor of Marketing (Education) & Associate Provost (Undergraduate Education) Michelle Lee said children’s anxiety is a wake-up call for parents to ensure affection does not rise and fall with exam marks. She noted that parents’ anxiety over academic performance is rooted in an outdated belief that the academically excellent student is the ultimate ideal, adding that parents should cultivate acceptance of alternative definitions of success and diverse talents, treating the PSLE as one data point in a much longer, less predictable race.
