Commentary: Banning Roblox may not be the solution to teen radicalisation

In a commentary, Dr Chew Han Ei, Associate Director of SMU’s Office of Impact, said banning Roblox should not be Singapore’s first or only response to online harms, noting that such a move would not necessarily prevent radicalisation. He argued for stronger platform safeguards, pointing out that app-store age assurance does not govern in-app recommendations, content or how reports are handled. Dr Chew said the priority should be to identify gaps in the existing framework and address them, rather than introduce another regulatory category that may not resolve issues involving platforms that span multiple categories.
