In a commentary, SMU President Professor Lily Kong reflected on what will keep Singapore feeling like home in the decades ahead. She said that, alongside the physical infrastructure Singapore has built so successfully, greater attention must be paid to the less visible social infrastructure of relationships, trust and mutual responsibility. Prof Kong proposed three areas for action: creating and protecting “third spaces” where people can linger and connect; supporting the people who bring shared spaces and communities to life; and incorporating social value into how projects are designed, procured and assessed. She noted that Singapore’s next challenge is not simply whether the city will continue to work, but whether it will continue to feel like home.
