In a commentary, SMU President Professor Lily Kong opines that the public debate over the Teochew-language film Dear You presents an opportunity to revisit Singapore's language policy — not by questioning bilingualism, but by considering how it might evolve for a more mature society. While affirming bilingualism as one of Singapore's most successful nation-building policies, she contends that the logic governing language education need not automatically extend to the cultural domain. She calls for heritage languages and dialects to be recognised as cultural assets that carry memory, identity and intergenerational connection, and proposes that Singapore build on the foundations of bilingualism by moving from "bilingual discipline" to "multilingual confidence".
