A new study by SMU’s Centre for Research on Successful Ageing (ROSA) found that while close to seven in 10 Singaporeans are aware of the Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), only around one in three have made one, highlighting a significant gap between awareness and preparedness for cognitive decline or medical crises. SMU Professor of Sociology (Practice) and ROSA Director Paulin Straughan said many Singaporeans assume loved ones can automatically step in during a crisis, but without an LPA, the legal process may be far less straightforward. She added that delaying such decisions can create added stress and uncertainty for families during illness or cognitive decline, while appointed donees also need clearer understanding of the responsibilities involved.
