SMU’s Master of Data Science in Economics (MDSE) programme combines data science and economics to meet growing demand for professionals who can pair advanced AI and data science capabilities with economic insight. Open to both early- and mid-career professionals with no prior programming background, the programme emphasises the application of AI, machine learning and econometrics for informed, accountable decision-making. According to SMU Associate Professor of Economics and MDSE Programme Director Daniel Preve, unlike many data science programmes focused mainly on prediction and deployment, the MDSE emphasises causal inference and predictive uncertainty, elements critical for understanding not only what may happen, but why.
