In a commentary, SMU Associate Professor of Law Eugene Tan discussed how artificial intelligence's (AI) growth, development and influence will be amplified through “technological capitalism”, raising concerns about the blurring line between people and algorithms. He warns that how AI is conceived, trained and deployed often presents congenital flaws, making it necessary to balance the economic benefits of new technologies with the protection of human rights and dignity. Assoc Prof Tan emphasises that technology must augment human capabilities rather than subjugate people to non-human imperatives, arguing that only responsible AI use grounded in rights, ethics and values can ensure meaningful progress while preserving common humanity.
